Have You Tried Essential Oils?

Some of my own oils.

The more I read about essential oils, the more they appeal to me. (When I’m talking about essential oils, do realize they’re different from fragrance oils.) According to an article written by Jacqueline Silvestri Banks, and published by Fox 6, “Essential oils, containing potent medicinal and cosmetic properties, are a versatile part of a natural medicine cabinet. They work to support the body’s own healing system, and when used correctly, may be able to take the place of conventional over-the-counter remedies.” The oils are taken from plant parts and mixed with oil, alcohol, or lotion.
Aromatherapy can be used to help with many different illnesses and unpleasant situations. Personally, I use peppermint oil to help with motion sickness and when I’m suffering from a cold. When I have a headache, grapeseed oil and lavender work best for me. I lather my hands in the oil, or I put a hint of it on my scarf and sniff throughout the day. It’s wonderful!

According to Simple Homemade, Modern Alternative Pregnancy, and my own experiences, essential oils can be used for…
  • Air freshening
  • Cleaning
  • Stress Management
  • First Aid, Sunburn, and Headaches
  • Massage Oil
  • Labor (Encourage Labor, Stall Labor, Back Pain, Blood Pressure) *According to WebMD, pregnant women are discouraged from using aromatherapy since certain oils (such as juniper, rosemary, and sage) can cause uterine contractions.
  • Breast Infection

Of course, not all remedies work for everyone. Aromatherapy is, however, a very old remedy that’s often overlooked when we’re feeling uncomfortable. Next time you have a cold, headache, or are feeling anxious, I dare you to try a natural remedy before driving to the store to buy an over-the-counter medication.

I found this list of essential oils and what they’re often used for. This site does not sponsor me, and I am not encouraging or discouraging anyone from buying their products online. I simply think it's a good list! Essential Oils: Descriptions, Profiles & Uses
